Volvo: In cooperation with Epic Games, Volvo wants to equip its electric cars with “photorealistic” graphics. The so-called Unreal Engine of the US software company is used for this. Customers should benefit from better infotainment systems.
Our vehicles always reflect the current time. While earlier models did not have a lot of electronics, a touch screen is enough to set the required function today. The interaction between humans and computers will continue to develop in the years to come.
In this context, the so-called “Human Machine Interface” (HMI) is increasingly being used. Volvo has already shown in recent years that the carmaker has recognized the changing times. By the middle of the decade, Solo plans to sell up to 600,000 all-electric vehicles annually.
As part of a partnership with the software company Epic Games, Volvo also wants to focus more on HMI. The Swedish car manufacturer intends to equip its e-cars with “photorealistic” graphics.
Unreal Engine Brings High-Resolution Information To The Volvo Cockpit
Specifically, it’s about the Unreal Engine from Epic Games. In 1998 the company released the first version of the framework. Many games and IT industry developers are now using the unrealistic Engine. However, the framework is mainly used in computer and console games.
That could soon change with the cooperation between Volvo and Epic Games because the integration of the unrealistic Engine in the carmaker’s vehicles is intended to improve the interaction between the driver and the car.
However, Volvo has not yet announced specific application scenarios. But some things can already be guessed at today. The efficiency of onboard systems is likely to increase. At the same time, the eye benefits from high-quality animations. So it’s less about the amount of information than the correct presentation and classification.
Volvo And The Car Industry As Attractive Partners For Epic Games
But Epic Games will also benefit from the partnership. The company that brought the Unreal Engine to prominence has been looking for cooperation partners outside the gaming industry for some time. The animation and display of objects are still easier for the Engine than that of people.
Logically, something inanimate has fewer parameters that need to be considered. Volvo shows that the company wants to keep up with the big players in the cooperation.
A few years ago, Volvo focused on Android Automotive and integrated Google’s services into the infrastructure of its vehicles. The new operating system VolvoCars.OS should guarantee a perfect interaction between all components in the car. The interaction between humans and computers will continue to develop in the years to come.
